about

In 2018, the motto of my summer seemed to be “I’m good! How are you?” At every party I went to, I found myself counterfeiting connections: making plans with people whose names I'd forgotten, who likely didn’t remember mine either.

"Raincheck Summer" explores the idea of authentic connection, though when I wrote this song in 2018, I had no way of knowing how relevant it would become. Initially, the song was intended to poke fun at the emotional distance we establish with people we're together with physically. However, in the past couple of months, the song’s meaning has shifted, now raising the question of how we can deepen social bonds while remaining physically separate.

lyrics

It was a raincheck summer
Let’s hang out soon never
I think I got your number
And I won’t use it ever

I forgot your name
I probably never knew it
I’m gonna call ya babe
And hope that you don’t notice

It was a raincheck summer
Let’s hang out soon never
I think I got your number
And I won’t use it ever

I’m good how are you
We’re counterfeitin’ answers
Then I stage a coup
And run off with your lighter

We don’t know a thing
That’s why we make it up yeah
The past is fossilized
But we still dig it up

It was a raincheck summer
Let’s hang out soon never
I think I got your number
And I won’t use it ever

Meanwhile in hell
The devil strings on her pearls
Gives herself a wink
Fiddling with her curls

Nobody knows what it means
But it’s provocative (x4)

Nobody knows what it means (x3)
Nobody cares what it means
